A great example of the power of the mind comes from a study that was done with 180 people that had osteoarthritis of the knee. The people were randomly assigned to receive actual surgery of the knee or a placebo procedure. Patients in the placebo group received skin incisions and were stitched back up again without having any actual surgery done.
The entire group was monitored over a two year period and the outcomes or the surgery group and the placebo group were the same.
